Why Would Sada Baby Not Rank Eminem In His Top Five From Detroit?

Originally posted on Vibe 4/19/2019

Eminem is the most prolific and successful rapper of all time. His stats can’t be faded. When it’s all said and done, we’ll be retiring his number in every stadium he’s ever sold out.

With over 100 million records sold worldwide, an Oscar for Best Original Song, 10 No. 1 albums, more than 1 billion streams on Spotify, two top 100, all-time best selling albums, Marshall Bruce Mathers III is the highest selling rapper of all time. His top five status should be firmly cemented.

INTERVIEW: MC Eiht Reveals Origins Of Shelved Movie Opposite Bernie Mac & Lisa Raye

Originally posted on HipHopDX 6/27/2017

Perhaps one of the biggest mysteries of MC Eiht’s career is that we never saw him in a major role on the big screen after his standout performance in Menace II Societyas the cap-pillin’ South Central native, A-Wax. While the Compton MC explains his lack of interest in Hollywood, he divulges of a potential Blackbuster hit that was seized by the feds before it could ever see the light of day.

“I’ve never really actually went after movie roles,” Eiht explained during a recent episode of #DXLive.” [If] somebody felt that I was fit for a part or do good in a particular situation then I would usually just let them come and ask me if I wanna get down. As far as like getting an agent and going after movie roles, I never got into that. I was strictly emceeing. That was my thing. A lot of times when you get into the Hollywood thing, you gotta conform to somebody you really don’t want to be or they try to change you into something. I just felt that trying to keep my own authentic direction with music that I wouldn’t go after roles. It’s not like people didn’t call me but a lot of stuff was comedy shit, a lot of stuff was Uncle Tom shit so I just backed away from it. I did Menace II Society and then that came with Thicker Than Water and then I had a little role in the Freeway Rick story. Just little bullshit. Who Made The Potato Salad, I did a little role. Then I shot a movie in Chicago that was called Reasons but it was government, political drug shit so they seized the movie and it never came out. We shot this movie maybe 15 years ago. Bernie Mac was in it. Lisa Raye was in it. It was a drug movie. A dude called Nathaniel Hill; he was a pretty big drug dealer and he basically made a movie about it. They seized the movie because he basically told the story of how he came up. He was on a worldwide run, they extradited him from Africa. We shot it in Chicago. It took us maybe four months to shoot it. Real big movie. Spike Lee’s producer [Monty Ross] directed it. It was gon’ be a big, large movie. I played the lead role. It was a real neighborhood pic but it was governments and indictments and courts and all that; followings and grand jury’s so they basically seized the movie.”

INTERVIEW: Fashawn Announces New Album, “Manna”

Originally posted on HipHopDX 3/24/2017

Fresno MC and Mass Appeal artist Fashawn stopped by #DXLive to give us the exclusive on his forthcoming effort. “It’s about to drop on y’all, probably April 29th, the day of Grizzly Fest. Y’all the first people I’m telling this to,” says Fashawn. “It’s called Manna. That’s where the beauty comes from. I had to figure out a title that really encompassed [how I feel],” Fashawn explains to the #DXLive cast as HipHopDX Editor-In-Chief Trent Clark pointed out the parallel to the Bible where manna was “coming down from the sky.”

Fashawn also discusses the confusion between mixtapes and albums. “It’s a project. I don’t even know anymore [if there’s a difference between albums and mixtapes], the lines are so blurred. I just call them projects. The Fresno MC also goes into detail about what we can expect from Manna, “It’s just me,” Fashawn exclaims when asked about features. “I got love for everybody in Hip Hop but a lot of cats just didn’t make the cut. I still got time to work on the project so I’m still laying the finishing touches on it [so] you never know. I got a few people in mind so hopefully if their schedules permit it [and] if they got enough love for the kid they can [send their verses in].”

ALBUM REVIEW: The Birth Of A Nation: The Inspired By Album

The past few months have seen the long-awaited slave period film Birth of a Nationmired in controversy. Nate Parker, the film’s creator, lead actor and co-writer, has had quite the task escaping the cloud cast by his past acquittal of a college year rape accusation and all but saw the buzz of his Sundance Film Festival darling halted. To add valleys to the uphill battle, Parker’s rendition of the story of Nat Turner has also been met with a plethora of mixed reviews. For what the movie may lack, The Birth of a Nation: The Inspired By Album offers up a suitable alternative.

Boasting of a laundry list of Hip Hop’s elite and R&B stars, the original soundtrack seamlessly mixes artists across multiple rap subgenres to create a sonic experimentation of music that spits in the face of sedition. Lecrae and Leon Bridges embody the film’s rebellious persona with their own haunting, organ-backed and percussion laced opus “On My Own.” Lecrae preaches the plight of our ancestors with powerful bars “I’ve been pushing hard/I’ve been praying harder/Only Heaven can help me/They took my Earthly father/Mama they promised me death and walked me into my grave/I’d rather die a free man than live on Earth a slave/I’m fighting for people they put in chains/they stripped our heritage they took our names/Put our women to shame.”
